Talking with the ATO

50% of payment arrangements entered into with the ATO end in default according to information sourced by Smartcompany.

During 2009/10 the amount due to the ATO totaled approximately $12.15 billion, apparently 10% more than the year before.  Of this, it is estimated that 60% relates to SMEs.

The message from the ATO is to make contact sooner rather than later.  More options are available to a taxpayer the earlier contact is made.

Compliance and its history are one of the key motivators for the ATO.  Whilst the ATO acknowledges that negotiations for payment arrangements are made on a case by case basis, a poor track record may be a stumbling block in negotiations.

The ATO is no different to any other business analyst.  If there is a track of defaults and poor compliance, business viability concerns are immediately raised.

The upshot.  If you are going to negotiate with the ATO, what will you do that is different to ensure default doesn’t occur?  Is the payment arrangement you are entering into sustainable?
